Out of the many things in the clutter of my house, there is only one thing that truly holds meaning, mostly for me, but for my grandmother, too. This object happens to be a ring, passed down for four (technically three) generations. It belonged to my great-grandmother, Mary Zimmerman. Mary had passed it to my Great-Aunt, Nancy Zimmerman. Nancy had passed it to her sister, or my grandmother, Mary Olt, and since she had no daughters (only four sons), she had given it to me. I felt important to be given a ring that ties so well into the history of my family, instead of one of my female cousins receiving it.

When I had first received the ring, I thought nothing of it. To me, it was just a dumb ring. Now I see the importance of wearing something passed down through the generations. When I first got it, I just threw it into my pink jewelry/music box, filled with jewelry that I never wear, and forgot about it. That was about eight years ago when I detested wearing jewelry. It wasn’t until the last week of April 2013, when the freshman got an order form to buy a class ring, that I remembered it. Ever since then, I have never taken it off, except when I take a shower. The ring reminds me of my ancestors of the past and what they had to go through in order to have a great life in the future.

The ring holds so much importance and is always on the ring finger of my right hand, unless I take it off and play with it. It fits perfectly on my finger, not too tight and not too loose, and we never even got it fitted. This ring has one jewel in it. It looks as though it is the January birthstone, Garnet. The ring is made up of what appears to be Gold, since it is golden. If you would take the ring off and look inside of it, it will tell you that it is 10K gold. The ring reminds me of a ring that a upper-class citizen, in about the time of Shakespeare, would have worn. In my opinion, the ring is beautiful, I have always thought that, but “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.

The jewel of the ring feels flat to the touch, but if you look at it, you can see all of the angles of it. When the ring it on my finger, it feels like a part of me. A lot of the time, I forget I have it on and start to freak out because of the way it fits. The base of the ring, that is golden, is very smooth, but the golden part holding the jewel in place is very rough. Luckily, the rough part of the ring does not touch the finger while you are wearing the ring.

Throughout time, this ring has been through a lot of different things that would have damaged a modern day ring. Throughout the years, it has been dropped many times (in all kinds of stuff), out in all kinds of weather, storage, and who knows what else it has been through. This ring has remained strong and beautiful throughout its existence. It is not just a cheap, pretty ring.

When I was younger, I remember that this ring went through a lot because of me. It was dropped repeatedly by me (once or twice in the toilet), and it was stored for a really long time. However, it hasn’t changed one bit.

I do not know if my grandmother had appreciated this ring as I do. I do not know if she had even worn it on a daily basis. Her sister might have had high importance for it, and maybe just gave it away when her eyesight got too bad (she had to get an eye transplant). I do not know if as children, these two girls had seen their mother wearing the ring and dreamed of also wearing it. It is unknown if those two girls had even taken the ring on occasions and played dress-up with it. It is also unknown how much importance my great-grandmother had for it.

My grandmother never actually told me how old this ring is and how long it has been in our family. All she ever said is that it belonged to her mother (who had died of breast cancer). For all I know, it could have belonged to my great-great-great grandmother. It could have belonged to many generations before her. Whoever originally bought it, it is unknown to me if they were born in January, or if they just choose this stone because they liked it. There is so much that is unknown to me about this ring, but I still have high importance for it.
Object Memoir for creative writing in my Freshman year. Probably should've used fake names in it, but what the hell, I'm too lazy. If you guys want to see a picture of the ring, ask. I can take one and submit it, but only if at least one person says they want to see it.
